Kia Sonet: Bookings, launch, expected price, features, specifications, other details you should know

 

The customers looking to buy a compact SUV will soon have a new option in the form of Kia Sonet. The Sonet made its world premiere last week and we must add here that it has left many speechless with its design, features and specifications. Like the Seltos, the new Sonet will be manufactured at Kia Motors India's Anantapur production facility in Andhra Pradesh and exported to global markets.

There is no denying that competition in the compact SUV segment is quite fierce. It has some formidable vehicles like Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300 and Ford EcoSport. Any newcomer setting foot in the compact SUV segment needs to have a USP of its own to make a mark for itself and from whatever we have seen so far, Kia Sonet seems to have more than one.

Talking about the powertrains, the customers will have as many as three choices -- Smart stream 1.2-liter 4-cylinder petrol, 1.0 T-GDi petrol and 1.5-liter CRDi diesel. By now you must be aware that Kia Sonet shares its engines with Hyundai Venue. There are five transmission choices -- 5-speed MT, 6-speed MT, 6-speed iMT, 6-speed AT and 7-speed DCT. The 1.5-liter CRDi diesel motor in the Sonet will have a 6-speed AT option, something that you don't get in the Venue.

Like most of the vehicles from Kia's stable, the new Kia Sonet gets a signature 'tiger-nose' grille at the front. The grille has a diamond-knurl pattern according it a premium feel. The LED headlamps with the LED DRLs look sporty. The contoured bumper houses the projector fog lamps. The 16-inch crystal-cut alloy wheels in the compact SUV are shod with MRF tyres. At the rear, you will come across LED tail lamps that are connected by a reflector strip. The dual muffler combines with a diffuser fin skid plate to add a bold touch to the rear. There are eight monotone and three dual-tone exterior color options.

Inside the cabin, you will notice a rather heavy dashboard. There is no compromise with the quality of material though. It is premium all around. The prime attraction is a 10.25-inch HD touchscreen infotainment system. The vertically stacked air vents have chrome surroundings with a diamond-knurled pattern. Between the central air vents, there are controls for the automatic climate control. The new Kia Sonet features 4.2-inch digital instrument cluster and multi-function steering wheel. Among the other notable features are Bose premium seven-speaker audio with sub-woofer, wireless smartphone charger, push-button start/stop, LED sound mood lighting, smart pure air purifier and sunroof. Like the Seltos and the Carnival, the Sonet also gets the UVO technology with as many as 57 connected features.


The top-spec GT Line variant of the new Kia Sonet has contrasting red stitching on the steering wheel, seats and door armrest. It also features a D-cut steering wheel and ventilated front seats.

The automaker claims that more than two-thirds of the Sonet's body is made up of high strength and advanced high strength steel. The compact SUV boasts of safety features like six airbags, ABS with EBD and BA, electronic stability control, hill-start assist control, vehicle stability management, front and rear parking sensors and TPMS.
